Buddhist India Tour

Buddhism originated in India around 2,600 years ago. After attaining Enlightenment at the age of 35, the Buddha spent 45 years sharing His teachings across North India. During His lifetime—especially after His Enlightenment—many places became significant Buddhist sites, and today they are revered pilgrimage destinations.

Soon after the Buddha's passing, His closest disciples convened the First Buddhist Council to preserve and compile His teachings. A century later, the Second Buddhist Council was held in Vaishali, a city often visited by the Buddha. The Third Council took place in Pataliputra (present-day Patna) during the reign of Emperor Ashoka (268–239 BCE). The Fourth Council was later held in Kashmir during the rule of Emperor Kanishka (127–141 CE).

After flourishing for over a thousand years, Buddhism gradually declined in India due to various factors, including foreign invasions and the rise of other religious traditions. As a result, many Buddhist sites were forgotten and left in ruins.

The revival of Buddhism began with archaeological discoveries during the colonial period. British archaeologists and scholars initiated excavations that unearthed remarkable Buddhist monuments. Notably, Sir Alexander Cunningham, in the 19th century, excavated several significant Buddhist sites. In 1891, Sri Lankan scholar Anagarika Dharmapala founded the Mahabodhi Society of India at Bodhgaya, marking a major milestone in the Buddhist revival movement. Since then, the Archaeological Survey of India has continued extensive excavations, leading to new discoveries even today. Consequently, most major Buddhist sites now feature museums that display a wide range of Buddhist artefacts and relics.

Although the highest among them is Annapurna I (8,091 m), it is Machhapuchhre which dominates all others in this neighborhood. This area strewn with shops selling commodities from edibles and cloth to cosmetics and gold is a pleasant and shady spot to stroll around.

The old bazaar is also home to one of Pokhara' s most important shrines. Locally called the Bindhyabasini Mandir, this white dome-like structure dominates a spacious stone-paved courtyard built atop a shady hillock. It is dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati, yet another manifestation of Shakti.
