Land of Rhino
One of the interesting wildlife sanctuaries worth visiting is the Kaziranga National Park. The Park is in Assam and is as well-known as the mighty river Brahmaputra.
It is world famous for being home of the one horned rhino. Many may not be aware that as recently as a century ago, this goliath was almost on the path of extinction with just a few rhinos available. However, the population of this prehistoric animal has grown to respectable numbers of 1500+ in modern times mainly because of the combined efforts by government, forest personnel and wildlife lovers.
The park is an effort to protect the various wildlife in it including the one horned rhino. It is around 430 square kilometers and is replete with swamps and grasslands coupled with elephant grass and evergreen forest. It was declared as a sanctuary in 1940 and is also a popular tourist attraction.
Travelers can easily view wildlife in the sanctuary of which the main inhabitant is the one horned rhino. India has the largest population of this imposing animal in the world. Elephants and jeeps are used as the main transport within the park. In fact, elephant safaris are opted by tourists often.
One day outings are mostly sufficient for travelers to see the different animals within the park. Other animals include barasingha, wild buffalo, swamp deer, sloth bears, tigers, elephants, and wild boar. The crested serpent eagle, grey headed fishing eagle, pallas fishing eagle, bar-headed goose, swamp partridge, Bengal florican, whistling teal, herons storks, and pelicans sum up the main bird life.
Travellers can also visit the ruins of Numaligarh, Kakochang waterfalls and many tea gardens as additional tourist spots when visitng Kazhiranga. The best time to visit the park is November to April with rail, road, and air transport available. The nearest town is Bokakhat, 23 kms away.
